Gumroad Fees (2026): What Gumroad Takes From Every Sale

By MoveToWhopUpdated 10 min readPricing verified

Quick answer

Gumroad charges no monthly fee. On a direct card sale it takes 10% + 50¢, and card processing of 2.9% + 30¢ comes on top, so a $10 product costs $2.09 in fees (20.9%). Discover marketplace sales pay a flat 30%. After $20,000 of sales in a calendar month, new direct sales drop to 5% + 50¢ for sellers who have that rate. Payouts need a $100 balance.

Every Gumroad fee in one table

Gumroad has no monthly fee. It charges per sale, and on a direct card sale you pay 12.9% + 80¢ once card processing is included. Payouts, refunds and disputes have their own rules, listed below.

The processing line is easy to miss. Gumroad's pricing page headlines "10% + $0.50", while its help center says that figure doesn't include card processing of 2.9% + 30¢ or PayPal's fees.

What Gumroad takes from a sale: worked examples

The fee formula for a direct card sale is price × 12.9% + $0.80. Here's how it plays out in five common situations.

Gumroad's fee is $1.00 + $0.50 = $1.50, and card processing is $0.29 + $0.30 = $0.59. That's $2.09 in total, so you keep $7.91, or 79.1% of the price.

The same ebook bought through Discover

Discover takes a flat 30%, or $3.00, and you keep $7.00. Once your account passes Gumroad's review, any product with a category, ratings turned on and at least one sale is listed on Discover by default, and listed products are opted into Gumroad's affiliate program automatically.

A $199 course

Gumroad's fee is $19.90 + $0.50 and processing is $5.77 + $0.30, so you pay $26.47 (13.3%) and keep $172.53. After you pass $20,000 in sales that month, and if your account has the high-volume rate, the same sale costs $16.52. Through Discover it would cost $59.70.

A $9/month membership over a year

Each monthly charge costs $1.96: $0.90 + $0.50 to Gumroad and $0.26 + $0.30 in processing. Over 12 months, one member pays $108 and you keep $84.47. Gumroad bills every renewal on the same day of the month as the first purchase.

A $50 sale through an affiliate with a 30% commission

The total fees are $7.25. The affiliate covers 30% of them ($2.18) and you cover 70% ($5.07), so you receive $29.93 and the affiliate receives $12.83.

Gumroad fees at $1,000, $10,000 and $50,000 a month

At a $10 average price, Gumroad's fee and processing take about 20.9% of your direct sales until you qualify for the high-volume rate. The same sales on Whop cost 5.7%, or 6.4% counting its $0.07 Radar fee.

$10,0001,000$2,09020.9%$570
$50,0005,000$8,95017.9%$2,850

All rows assume one-time sales paid with US cards, no Discover sales, no payout fees and no currency conversion. Whop's figures use its 2.7% + 30¢ card rate and leave out its $0.07 Radar fraud-screening fee per transaction, which would add $7, $70 and $350 (6.4% in total). The $50,000 row applies Gumroad's 5% rate to sales after the first $20,000; without it, Gumroad's fees would be $10,450 (20.9%). For a different price or a membership, use the platform fee calculator.

The 5% high-volume rate: who actually gets it

Gumroad's help center describes the rate as automatic, but Gumroad's public code shows it is being switched on one seller at a time. Treat it as a possible discount until your own sales show it.

Here's how the rate works on paper. Once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month pay 5% + 50¢ instead of 10% + 50¢. The count resets on the 1st of each month, and a refund that takes you back under $20,000 puts new sales back on 10%. Discover sales stay at 30%, the 50¢ stays, and any custom fee on your account takes priority.

Gumroad added the rate to its code on August 18, 2026, behind a feature flag. A September 25, 2026 change notes that sellers without the flag "never get the 5% rate". To check your account, export your sales for a month in which you passed $20,000 and compare the Fees ($) column before and after the crossing point.

Payout fees, minimums and timing

Bank payouts carry no listed fee, but you need a $100 balance, and each sale waits at least 7 days. Faster or PayPal payouts cost 2% to 3%.

Fees as of October 2026. Sources at the end of this page.

A few rules shape when money actually arrives:

  • The minimum balance for a regular payout is $100, raised from $10 on March 23, 2026. Some countries have higher local minimums.
  • On weekly, monthly and quarterly schedules, each sale sits in your balance for at least 7 days.
  • Your payout day depends on how you're paid: Thursday for US bank accounts, Friday for PayPal, and Tuesday or Wednesday for most other countries.
  • New accounts go through a risk review that Gumroad says takes 1 to 3 weeks, typically after 3 to 4 sales and a balance over $100.
  • Gumroad converts currencies at the exchange rate on the day of the sale, typically close to mid-market rates.
  • Changing your payout country can forfeit unpaid amounts held on a country-specific account, so wait for your balance to pay out first.

Refunds, chargebacks and taxes

Refunds cost you the processing portion of the fee, chargebacks cost you the sale plus processing, and sales tax is handled by Gumroad.

  • Refunds: Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded amount and keeps the processing portion. Refunding a $50 sale gives back Gumroad's $5.50, while $1.75 in processing is lost. Sales through your own connected Stripe or PayPal account follow different rules.
  • Chargebacks: you cover the disputed amount and the processing fees, and Gumroad returns its platform fee. Gumroad contests the dispute with the evidence you submit within 72 hours (120 if a weekend falls inside the window), and a high chargeback rate can trigger a risk review. Gumroad lists no separate dispute fee.
  • Sales tax and VAT: Gumroad has been the merchant of record for all sales since January 1, 2025. It calculates, collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST worldwide, so you don't manage tax settings. If you already file your own sales tax returns, Gumroad provides a reseller certificate.

This page explains published fees. It isn't financial or tax advice.

Gumroad fees vs Whop: is there a break-even point?

Not on fees. Whop costs less than Gumroad at every price and volume we tested, so there's no sales level at which Gumroad becomes cheaper.

  • Per sale: Whop charges 2.7% + 30¢ on a US card sale, or 3.2% + 30¢ on a subscription renewal when its 0.5% billing fee is on. Gumroad's 12.9% + 80¢ is about 10 percentage points and 50¢ higher. Whop also lists $0.07 per transaction for Radar fraud screening. If you gate a Discord server or Telegram group with Whop's apps, Whop's fee page lists no extra fee, but each app's listing says it adds 3% to payments on that product, so budget for it until Whop resolves the conflict. Counting Radar, a $10 sale costs $0.64 on Whop, or $0.94 if the 3% applies, against $2.09 on Gumroad.
  • At high volume: even at Gumroad's 5% rate (7.9% + 80¢ with processing), a $100 sale costs $8.70 against $3.00 on Whop ($3.07 with Radar).
  • Payouts: Whop charges $2.50 for a next-day ACH payout, while Gumroad's bank payouts have no listed fee. The per-sale savings cover that $2.50 once you withdraw more than about $12 to $23 at a time, depending on your price, and Gumroad won't pay out less than $100 anyway.
  • Tax: Gumroad's tax handling is included. Whop charges 2% if it collects tax on your direct sales, and a $10 sale still costs only $0.77 with that switched on ($0.84 with Radar), against $2.09 on Gumroad.
  • Disputes: Whop charges a $15 fee per dispute, while Gumroad lists no separate dispute fee.
  • Marketplace: Whop cut its published Discover fee from 30% to 0% on May 12, 2025. Gumroad Discover still takes 30%.

So the choice rests on what Gumroad does inside its fee: tax filing in countries beyond the US, EU and UK, where Whop doesn't remit, and Discover buyers you wouldn't reach yourself. Our Whop vs Gumroad comparison weighs those trade-offs, and Whop's own fee schedule lists every Whop charge.

How Gumroad's fees have changed

Gumroad's per-sale rate is the same as in mid-2026; the recent changes were to payouts, refunds and discounts. These are the dated changes we could source:

  • January 1, 2025: Gumroad became the merchant of record for all sales and began collecting and remitting sales tax and VAT worldwide.
  • March 23, 2026: the minimum payout balance rose from $10 to $100.
  • June 16, 2026: an archived copy of Gumroad's fee article shows the same 10% + 50¢ plus processing that applies today, with no high-volume rate.
  • July 17, 2026: Gumroad corrected its help-center wording on refunds. The old text said no fees were refunded; the current text says Gumroad returns its own fee and keeps processing.
  • August 18, 2026: the 5% + 50¢ rate after $20,000 in a calendar month was added, switched on seller by seller.

How Gumroad compares with other platforms

On a $20 sale, Gumroad's $3.38 in fees is the highest of the platforms below. Flat-fee platforms charge less per sale but add a monthly price.

Patreon's row is its Standard plan for pages launched after August 4, 2025 (10% plus 2.9% + 30¢ processing); our Patreon fees guide covers its other plans. Payhip, Ko-fi and Stan Store figures include Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢. Whop's $0.84 leaves out its $0.07 Radar fee per transaction; with it ($0.91), Stan Store Creator's $0.88 is slightly lower per sale, before Stan's $29 monthly price.

Is Gumroad worth it?

Gumroad is worth it while your sales are small or Discover brings you buyers. Past a few hundred dollars a month, its fees cost more than most alternatives.

At $200 a month in $20 sales, Gumroad takes about $34 and Whop about $8 ($9 with Radar). Ko-fi Gold, at $12 a month with no service fee, costs less than Gumroad from roughly $100 a month at that price. What Gumroad's fee buys you is real, though: tax filing worldwide, not just in the US, EU and UK, and Gumroad Discover's audience.

Check your own Gumroad fees

Your sales export shows exactly what you paid. Export your sales for the last few months, add up the Fees ($) column and divide by the total of the Sale Price ($) column. That's your real effective rate. Rows marked 1 in the Discover? column are the sales that paid 30%.

Then enter your average price and monthly sales in the fee calculator linked above to see the same volume on Whop and other platforms.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Gumroad take per sale?

On a direct card sale, Gumroad takes 10% + 50¢, and 2.9% + 30¢ card processing is added on top, for 12.9% + 80¢ in total. That's $2.09 on a $10 sale, $7.25 on a $50 sale and $13.70 on a $100 sale. Sales that come through Gumroad's Discover marketplace pay a flat 30% instead, with processing included.

Does Gumroad charge a monthly fee?

No. Gumroad has no subscription plans, no tiers and no monthly charge, and its help center says there are no other hidden charges. You pay only when you make a sale. Optional costs come from how you get paid: PayPal payouts cost 2%, and instant payouts for eligible US creators cost 3%.

Why are my Gumroad fees higher than 10%?

Because the 10% + 50¢ doesn't include card processing. Gumroad's own fee article lists processing of 2.9% + 30¢ as extra, so a direct card sale really costs 12.9% + 80¢. The fixed 80¢ weighs most on cheap products: on a $5 sale the total is $1.45, or 28.9%. Your sales CSV's Fees ($) column shows the exact amount for each sale.

How much is the Gumroad Discover fee?

A flat 30% of the sale, which includes processing, charged when a buyer finds your product through Gumroad's marketplace. A $20 sale through Discover costs $6.00, against $3.38 as a direct sale. Discover is on by default for products with a category; delete the category on a product's Share tab to take it off Discover.

Does Gumroad refund its fees when I refund a customer?

Partly. Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded amount but keeps the card-processing portion, because processors don't return it. Refunding a $50 sale gives back Gumroad's $5.50 while the $1.75 in processing is lost. Sales through your own connected Stripe or PayPal account follow different rules. Until July 2026, Gumroad's help center said no fees were refunded.

Is Gumroad raising its fees in 2026?

The per-sale rate hasn't gone up: 10% + 50¢ plus processing was already listed in June 2026 and still is. The 2026 changes are elsewhere. Gumroad raised its minimum payout from $10 to $100 on March 23, 2026, and added a lower 5% + 50¢ rate for direct sales after $20,000 in a calendar month, which it is turning on seller by seller.
