Whop vs Gumroad (2026): Fees, Payouts and Which to Pick
MoveToWhop is independent and not affiliated with Whop, Inc. or any platform we cover. We may earn a referral commission from Whop when you create a Whop through our links. It never costs you anything, and it's how we keep migrations free. How we make money
Quick answer
Whop costs less per sale: a $50 card sale loses $1.65 to fees on Whop versus $7.25 on Gumroad, which charges 10% + 50¢ plus 2.9% + 30¢ card processing. Whop's published marketplace fee is 0% where Gumroad Discover takes 30%. Gumroad still wins on hands-off tax: it collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide on every sale, while Whop's optional tax service costs 2% on direct sales and remits only in the US, EU and UK.
Our verdict
Choose Whop if
you sell memberships, courses or community access, or sell more than a few hundred dollars a month, because its fees run about 10 percentage points lower on a US card sale at Gumroad's standard rate (about 7 if you gate Discord or Telegram, where Whop's app listings say a 3% fee applies though its fee page lists none)
Choose Gumroad if
you want sales tax and VAT handled worldwide at no extra cost, want to email buyers and followers without a separate tool, get real sales from Discover, or sell software whose licensing already runs on Gumroad keys

Pricing and fees: what you actually pay
Neither platform charges a monthly fee, so the comparison comes down to what each takes per sale. Once card processing is added, Gumroad's direct-sale fee works out to 12.9% + 80¢, while Whop's is 2.7% + 30¢, or 3.2% + 30¢ on subscriptions when Whop's 0.5% billing fee is enabled.
The formulas behind every number on this page:
- Gumroad direct sale: price × 12.9% + $0.80. That's Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 plus 2.9% + $0.30 for card processing, which Gumroad's help center lists as extra.
- Gumroad Discover sale: price × 30%. The flat rate includes processing.
- Whop one-time sale: price × 2.7% + $0.30. Subscriptions add Whop's 0.5% billing fee when it's enabled; the subscription column below assumes it is.
Fees per sale
Prices as of October 2026. Sources at the end of this page.
| Sale price | Gumroad direct | Gumroad Discover | Whop one-time | Whop subscription |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $5 | $1.45 (28.9%) | $1.50 | $0.44 (8.7%) | $0.46 |
| $10 | $2.09 (20.9%) | $3.00 | $0.57 (5.7%) | $0.62 |
| $25 | $4.03 (16.1%) | $7.50 | $0.98 (3.9%) | $1.10 |
| $50 | $7.25 (14.5%) | $15.00 | $1.65 (3.3%) | $1.90 |
| $100 | $13.70 (13.7%) | $30.00 | $3.00 (3.0%) | $3.50 |
Gumroad's fixed 80¢ is why cheap products suffer most. On a $5 sale, more than a quarter of the price goes to fees. On Whop, the fixed part is 30¢.
Fees per year
At a $50 average one-time sale, a store doing $10,000 a month pays about $17,400 a year in Gumroad fees and $3,960 on Whop.
Prices as of October 2026. Sources at the end of this page.
| Monthly sales | Sales a month at $50 | Gumroad fees a year | Whop fees a year | Difference a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 20 | $1,740 | $396 | $1,344 |
| $10,000 | 200 | $17,400 | $3,960 | $13,440 |
| $50,000 | 1,000 | $69,000 | $19,800 | $49,200 |
The $50,000 row uses Gumroad's high-volume rate: once paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month pay 5% + 50¢ instead of 10% + 50¢. Gumroad's help center says the rate applies automatically, but its public code shows it's switched on seller by seller, so confirm it in your sales export. Without it, that row costs $87,000 a year on Gumroad. All rows assume US cards, no add-ons, no payout fees and no currency conversion.
When part of your revenue comes from Discover
If 20% of your revenue arrives through Gumroad Discover, your blended Gumroad cost at $10,000 a month rises to about $1,760 a month (17.6%), or $21,120 a year. Whop's published marketplace commission is 0%, but it won't necessarily send you those same buyers. Treat Discover's 30% as a cost of finding customers: worth paying for buyers who would never have found you on their own.
Costs the headline rates leave out
Each platform has extra charges that show up only in certain situations.
- Whop adds 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion applies, though one-time sales that use its free adaptive pricing (local-currency checkout) pay the domestic rate instead. Its fee page also lists $0.07 per transaction for Radar fraud screening, $0.03 when 3D Secure runs, and $15 per dispute.
- Whop charges for payouts: $2.50 for a next-day ACH transfer to a US bank, or 4% + $1 for an instant payout.
- Gumroad charges 2% on PayPal payouts and 3% on instant payouts, which only eligible US creators can use.
- On a refund, Gumroad returns its own fee but keeps the processing portion. On a chargeback, you cover the sale and processing, and Gumroad returns its fee.
- If you gate a Discord server, Telegram group or TradingView indicator with Whop's apps, the fee is unsettled. Whop's fee page lists no extra charge, but each app's Whop listing says adding it subjects that product's payments to a 3% fee. Budget for it until Whop resolves the conflict.
Even with every Whop surcharge switched on (international card, currency conversion, subscription billing, orchestration, the tax service, Radar and 3D Secure, 8.5% + $0.40 in total), a $50 membership charge costs $4.65 on Whop against $7.25 on Gumroad, or $6.15 on Whop if the possible 3% Discord-app fee also applies. Those Gumroad figures use its standard rate: at its 5% high-volume rate the same sale costs $4.75, about the same as a fully loaded Whop charge and less than one carrying the 3% fee. To model your own mix, use the platform fee calculator, or read our line-by-line Gumroad fee breakdown and Whop fees explained.
Sales tax, VAT and who the merchant of record is
Both platforms are the merchant of record for your sales, but only Gumroad handles tax on every sale for free. That difference is the strongest case for staying on Gumroad.
Gumroad has been the merchant of record for all sales since January 1, 2025. It calculates, collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST worldwide, and creators don't manage tax settings at all. That service is part of the 10%.
Whop is the merchant of record on Whop Payments, but tax works differently. On Discover marketplace sales, Whop handles tax wherever it's registered. On direct sales through your own checkout links, you pick one of three options:
- Whop collects tax and you remit it: 2% per transaction, covering every US state plus 90+ countries.
- Whop collects and remits tax: 2% per transaction, covering the US, EU and UK only.
- You handle tax yourself: no Whop fee.
Adding the 2% still leaves Whop cheaper per sale: a $50 sale costs $2.65 on Whop with the tax service, against $7.25 on Gumroad. What you give up is reach. Gumroad remits worldwide, while Whop files and remits only in the US, EU and UK, so obligations elsewhere stay with you. This page explains published fees. It isn't financial or tax advice.
Payouts and account holds
Whop gets money to you sooner and lets you withdraw smaller amounts. Gumroad's bank payouts carry no listed fee, but you wait at least 7 days and need $100.
Gumroad pays weekly by default, covering sales through the previous Friday, and each sale sits in your balance for at least 7 days. You need a $100 balance to be paid, up from $10 before March 23, 2026. Bank deposits go out in local currency in around 120 countries; where banks aren't supported, Gumroad pays through PayPal for a 2% fee. New accounts go through a review that Gumroad says takes 1 to 3 weeks.
On Whop, sale money becomes available for withdrawal in 1 to 4 business days, and the minimum withdrawal is $10. Standard payouts take up to 5 business days, though Whop's troubleshooting page says to allow up to 10. New accounts start with a $2,500 cap per checkout link until Whop approves higher amounts, and Whop may hold a reserve, such as 10% of each sale for 90 days, on new or higher-risk accounts.
Sellers report payout frustrations on both platforms. One Gumroad seller describes payouts skipped for months over compliance checks, and a Whop seller describes a 90-day rolling reserve placed after about $20,000 in sales. These are individual reports and may not be typical, but new accounts on either platform should expect reviews before payouts run smoothly.
Checkout and payment methods
Both checkouts take cards, PayPal and wallets, and both let buyers pay in installments. Gumroad's parity pricing is its distinct tool for global buyers, while Whop can show one-time prices in the buyer's own currency and offers more ways to pay, including buy now, pay later once you qualify.
- Gumroad accepts cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay, local methods such as UPI in India, and, if you opt in, ACH bank payments from US buyers, which take about 4 business days to clear. It also offers installment plans, with standard fees on each installment, and purchasing power parity pricing that discounts products by 20% to 60% based on where the buyer lives.
- Whop says it supports more than 100 payment methods, including PayPal, crypto and bank debits. Checkout links also offer split pay (installments) without financing approval, and adaptive pricing shows one-time prices in the buyer's currency at no cost to you (the buyer pays a small conversion fee), swapping the international and currency-conversion surcharges for the domestic rate. Financing through providers such as Klarna and Afterpay needs approval: a verified Whop Payments account, at least $30,000 processed from 10 or more customers in the last 90 days, and a dispute rate under 2%. Financed sales cost 15%, work on one-time payments only, and Whop pays you upfront.
Bottom line: Gumroad's parity pricing suits sellers with many buyers in lower-income countries, and Whop's financing suits established sellers of higher-priced offers.
Selling software, courses and memberships
Both platforms sell downloads, memberships and software keys. Whop goes further on courses and community, while Gumroad's license keys include extras such as multi-seat licenses.
- Storefront and downloads: every Whop business gets a public store page and can add a free whop.site website (live since August 27, 2026), built by Whop AI, from a blueprint or in code. There's no drag-and-drop editor, and custom domains currently need Whop's API. Downloads are delivered through Whop's Files app, and since October 1, 2026 Whop buyers can put several products in one cart, as Gumroad buyers already can.
- Software: Gumroad issues license keys with a verify API, multi-seat licenses and usage counts you can edit. Whop's Software app gives each buyer a key that your software validates through Whop's API, and you can bind it to one machine with a hardware ID.
- Courses: Gumroad course material lives on a product's content pages, a flat list without modules. Whop Courses organizes chapters and lessons, with quizzes and completion certificates.
- Memberships and community: Gumroad offers membership tiers, free trials of a week or a month, and a chat space for each product. Whop adds Chat, Forums, events, built-in livestreaming with saved replays, and Discord server access.
Bottom line: a paid community or course gets more from Whop's apps, and software sellers should compare the two key systems feature by feature before switching.
When Gumroad is the better choice
Gumroad is the better pick if you'd otherwise pay, in money or time, for work it does inside its 10%.
- Most of your buyers are outside the US, EU and UK, and you want no tax admin at all. Gumroad remits everywhere; Whop's remit option doesn't reach those buyers.
- Discover brings you buyers you can't reach yourself. Count the rows marked 1 in the Discover? column of your sales export before you decide.
- Your software validates Gumroad license keys and you can't ship an app update soon.
- You email buyers and followers from Gumroad, with broadcasts and automated Workflows, and don't want a separate email tool. Whop has no built-in broadcasts or sequences.
When Whop is the better choice
Whop is the better pick when fees are a real cost or when your product is a membership, course or community.
- You run a membership or community and want chat, forums, courses and Discord server access in one product.
- You sell more than a few hundred dollars a month. At a $50 average price, Whop saves about $1,344 a year for every $1,000 a month you sell, below $20,000 a month.
- You sell cheap products. Under $10, Gumroad's fees take more than 20% of each direct sale.
- You want marketplace exposure without a 30% marketplace commission.
- You need cash sooner: a $10 minimum and money available in 1 to 4 business days, then up to 5 business days for a standard bank payout.
Whop's limits, stated plainly:
- New accounts face a $2,500 checkout cap and possible reserves.
- You must pass KYC (personal details, bank details and an ID upload) before your first withdrawal.
- Having Whop collect tax on direct sales costs 2% (or handle it yourself for free), and Whop remits only in the US, EU and UK.
- You can't import members. Gumroad subscribers have to re-subscribe, and one-time buyers claim access through a link.
- Payouts carry fees: $2.50 for a next-day ACH transfer in the US, and more for instant, crypto or wire payouts.
- No built-in email marketing: no broadcasts, sequences or segments. Whop sends welcome and goodbye messages (with an optional email copy), forum posts by email and transactional emails. For newsletters, use an email app from Whop's App Store or your own email tool.
Switching from Gumroad to Whop
You can move products, prices, course outlines and your customer list, but not billing. Gumroad is the merchant of record and keeps the cards, so subscribers re-subscribe on Whop with a free trial that runs to their next Gumroad renewal, and one-time buyers get a free claim link. Gumroad bills each member on the day of the month they first bought, so renewal dates differ from member to member; the purchase dates in your sales export tell you when each member's first Whop charge should land. License keys need a planned switchover, because neither platform documents a way to import keys.

How we compared
We compared published fees and documented features only. Gumroad figures come from its pricing page, help center and public code repository; Whop figures come from docs.whop.com, Whop's blog and its app-store listings, all checked on October 3, 2026. Fee examples assume US cards, no optional add-ons and no payout fees unless stated, rounded to the cent per sale and to the dollar per year. We didn't run test sales on either platform for this page, and the Reddit reports above are labeled as anecdotes.

Frequently asked questions
Is Whop better than Gumroad?
On cost, yes for most sellers: on a US card sale at Gumroad's standard rate, Whop's fees run about 10 percentage points lower (about 7 if Whop's possible 3% Discord-app fee applies), and neither has a monthly fee. Gumroad is the better pick if you want worldwide sales tax and VAT handling or built-in buyer emails at no extra charge, if Discover sends you buyers you couldn't reach yourself, or if your software already checks Gumroad license keys.
Gumroad vs Whop fees: which is cheaper?
Whop, at every price we tested. A $10 sale costs $2.09 in Gumroad fees and $0.57 on Whop; a $100 sale costs $13.70 and $3.00. Gumroad Discover sales cost 30%, while Whop's published marketplace commission is 0%. At Gumroad's standard rate, Whop stays cheaper even with every surcharge applied, including the possible 3% Discord-app fee. On Gumroad's 5% high-volume tier the gap narrows, and heavy Whop surcharges can erase it.
Can I use Gumroad and Whop at the same time?
Yes. Nothing stops you from keeping products that sell well on Gumroad Discover while you run memberships or courses on Whop. Each platform bills its own customers, so a buyer can't move between them without buying again. Keep prices consistent across both, and point your main links at the platform where you want new buyers to land.
Does Whop charge a marketplace fee like Gumroad Discover?
Not in its published fees. Whop cut its Discover commission from 30% to 0% on May 12, 2025, so marketplace sales pay normal processing. Sales referred by Whop's global affiliates also pay the commission you set (30% by default) plus a 1.25% affiliate processing fee. Gumroad Discover takes a flat 30% and opts listed products into its affiliate program. Whop keeps a fee schedule per account, so confirm your rates in the dashboard.
Who handles sales tax on Whop and on Gumroad?
Gumroad does, on every sale: as merchant of record it collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST worldwide at no extra charge. Whop handles tax on Discover sales where it's registered. For your direct sales you choose between Whop collecting tax for you to remit, Whop collecting and remitting in the US, EU and UK (both cost 2%), or doing it yourself.
Which pays out faster, Whop or Gumroad?
Whop, for most sellers. Whop sale money becomes available in 1 to 4 business days and you can withdraw from $10. After KYC (ID and bank details), standard bank payouts take up to 5 business days, or minutes with a paid instant payout. Gumroad holds each sale at least 7 days, pays weekly by default and needs a $100 balance. Instant payouts cost 4% + $1 on Whop and 3% on Gumroad for eligible US creators.
Does Whop support software license keys like Gumroad?
Yes. Whop's Software app gives each buyer a unique key, and your software validates it through Whop's API, optionally binding it to a hardware ID. Gumroad's keys add multi-seat licenses and editable usage counts. Keys don't carry over between the two, so switching means shipping an app update that accepts Whop keys alongside your existing Gumroad keys for a while.
