Whop vs Discord Server Subscriptions: Fees, Payouts and Control
MoveToWhop is independent and not affiliated with Whop, Inc. or any platform we cover. We may earn a referral commission from Whop when you create a Whop through our links. It never costs you anything, and it's how we keep migrations free. How we make money
Quick answer
Discord Server Subscriptions keep about 15.4% of every desktop or web payment (a 6% processing fee plus a 10% platform fee), pay out monthly, and only work for US-based owners. A Whop-gated Discord costs 2.7% + $0.30 per subscription payment, plus 0.5% billing when enabled, under Whop's published fees, or 3% more if the fee on Whop's Discord app listing applies. On $10,000 a month from $10 members, that's $1,540 on Discord versus $620 to $920 on Whop.
Our verdict
Choose Whop if
you want to keep more of each payment, get paid within days instead of monthly, sell from outside the US, or add courses and annual plans; use Whop's own Chat if you'd rather skip Discord entirely
Choose Discord Server Subscriptions if
you're a US-based owner whose members live in Discord, and you'd rather they subscribe inside the app with Discord handling sales tax and refunds

Three ways to charge for a Discord community
You can charge through Discord itself, put Whop's checkout and bot in front of your server, or run the paid community on Whop with no Discord at all. Each route changes who holds the money, what members have to do, and what you pay.
- Discord Server Subscriptions is Discord's built-in paywall. You create one to three monthly tiers, attach roles and channels to each, and members subscribe inside the Discord app. Discord collects the money and pays you monthly.
- A Whop-gated Discord keeps your server exactly as it is. Members buy on Whop, link their Discord account, and Whop's bot hands out the roles you choose and removes them when a membership ends.
- Whop's own Chat and Forums replace the server. Members join inside Whop's website or mobile app, so there's no bot, no role hierarchy and no account linking.
The fee gap between the first option and the other two is large, so it's worth understanding exactly what Discord charges before you choose.
Discord server subscription fees, line by line
Discord keeps about 15.4% of each desktop or web subscription payment. That number comes from two fees in Schedule 1 of Discord's Monetization Terms (last updated June 6, 2024).
- A payment processing fee of 6% of the payment on desktop and browser purchases.
- A platform fee of 10%, calculated on the payment after taxes, processing fees and any other transaction fees are taken out.
- Transaction fees "as applicable", such as currency conversion charged by payment gateways, banks or Discord's payout provider.
So a $10 desktop subscription pays $0.60 in processing and $0.94 in platform fee, and you keep $8.46. Discord's own FAQ describes this as a 90/10 split while noting that "various fees" affect your final payment.
Mobile works differently. The iOS App Store charges 30% (15% once a subscriber has paid for more than a year) and Google Play charges 15% on auto-renewing subscriptions. Unless Discord agrees otherwise, it adds that fee to the buyer's price rather than taking it from yours, so iPhone subscribers pay more than desktop subscribers for the same tier. The 10% platform fee still applies.
Refunds follow Discord's own refund policy, and Discord can deduct refunds, chargebacks and chargeback fees from your future payouts.
What you keep at three revenue levels
Here's the same community at three sizes, with every member paying $10 a month by US card on desktop or web.
Prices as of October 2026, from Discord's and Whop's published terms and fee pages. Sources at the end of this page.
| Monthly revenue | Members at $10/mo | Discord Server Subscriptions | Whop-gated Discord | Whop-gated Discord if the 3% app fee applies | Whop Chat (no Discord) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 100 | $154 | $62 | $92 | $62 |
| $10,000 | 1,000 | $1,540 | $620 | $920 | $620 |
| $50,000 | 5,000 | $7,700 | $3,100 | $4,600 | $3,100 |
The formulas, rounded to whole dollars:
- Discord = revenue × (6% + 10% × 94%) = revenue × 15.4%.
- Whop = revenue × (2.7% processing + 0.5% subscription billing) + $0.30 × payments, plus 3% of revenue in the fourth column.
Whop's flat $0.30 per payment matters on cheap tiers. Below about $2.46 a month, Discord's percentage works out cheaper; if the 3% app fee applies, the crossover moves to about $3.26. Whop's fee page also lists $0.07 per transaction for Radar fraud screening, which the table leaves out because Whop doesn't say it applies to every charge. If it does, add $0.07 per payment: $690 (or $990 with the 3% fee) at $10,000, with the crossover at about $3.03 (about $4.02 with the 3% fee). Whop's other costs (international cards +1.5%, currency conversion +1%, $15 per dispute, payout fees from $2.50 for next-day ACH) are in our Whop fees explainer, and you can run your own tier prices through the fee calculator. This page explains published fees. It isn't financial or tax advice.
The 3% question on Whop's Discord app
Whop's fee page doesn't list a Discord fee, but the listing for its Discord app does. We show both because we couldn't settle which one is current.
As of October 3, 2026, docs.whop.com/fees lists card processing, billing, payouts, fraud tools and optional add-ons, with nothing tied to Discord or Telegram. An archived copy of that page from December 2025 shows a 3% fee on purchases with Discord, Telegram or TradingView automations, and it was gone by February 2026. Whop's app store listing for the Discord app still opens with a line saying that adding the app to a product brings a 3% fee on that product's payments.
Two practical takeaways. Read the fee lines on your first Whop payout before you commit a large community. And note the listing's wording: the 3% attaches to products that include the Discord or Telegram app, so by that reading a community run on Whop's own Chat wouldn't trigger it.
Who can sell with Discord Server Subscriptions
Only US-based owners can turn on Server Subscriptions, and Discord adds account, server and content rules on top.
The owner's account must:
- belong to someone 18 or older, in good standing, with no safety violations in the past 30 days;
- have a verified email and phone number and two-factor authentication turned on;
- be able to give Stripe US banking information and US identification, through a new Stripe account created just for Discord.
The server must have Community enabled, require two-factor authentication for moderation actions, and not be built mainly around NSFW content. Discord's Monetization Policy also rules out monetizing certain topics, including gambling advice and discussion, online dating, political campaigns, charity fundraising, and the "facilitation of financial asset transfers or securities ownership." Anything on Stripe's prohibited and restricted businesses list is out too. If you run a sports-picks or trading community, read the policy before you plan around Server Subscriptions.
Whop's rules are different rather than absent. Whop pays out to over 200 countries, but as merchant of record it can hold part of a new or higher-risk account's balance in reserve (its docs give 10% for 90 days as an example), and you'll complete identity verification before payouts.
Payouts and who holds the money
Discord pays monthly; Whop pays within days. Neither gives you the kind of custody you'd have with your own Stripe account.
Discord reviews each server at the end of the month. Your first payout needs at least $100 in earnings, later ones $25, and the Monetization Terms allow payouts up to 45 days after the end of the month in which members paid; Discord's FAQ says it processes payouts once a month, on or before the 15th. Discord can also hold payouts for compliance reasons or if it expects a high volume of refunds or chargebacks.
Whop sales become withdrawable after 1 to 4 business days, and standard payouts then take up to 5 business days, though Whop's troubleshooting page says to allow up to 10. Instant payouts arrive in minutes for 4% + $1. Next-day ACH costs $2.50, a bank wire $23, and the minimum withdrawal is $10.
Bottom line: if cash flow matters, Whop's payout schedule is the clear winner. If you're comfortable waiting for a monthly payout, Discord's model is simpler to run.
What members experience
Discord wins on convenience; Whop wins on choice. That trade sits at the heart of this comparison.
With Server Subscriptions, members subscribe from inside your server using a payment method saved to their Discord account, or add one on the spot. Free trials last 1 day or 1 week. Locked channels stay visible to non-subscribers (Discord doesn't let you hide them), which can work as a teaser. Refund requests go to Discord's billing support, not to you.
With a Whop-gated server, members check out on Whop, connect Discord under social accounts in their Whop settings, then open your product's Discord app and press Claim Access. You decide what happens when a membership ends: no action, remove the role, kick the member or remove all their roles. Subscriptions bought in Whop's iOS app go through Whop's web checkout, so iPhone subscribers pay the same price as everyone else. One-time purchases under $700 made inside the iOS app are different: they go through Apple, and Whop marks the price up 42.86% to cover Apple's fee.
Bottom line: Discord removes a step for members. Whop gives you more control over pricing, cancellation behavior and what else comes with the membership.
Whop Chat vs a Discord server
Whop Chat is enough when your members come for content, signals or coaching and don't need Discord's voice channels or bot ecosystem. It runs inside Whop's web and mobile apps, sits on the same product as your courses and files, and needs no account linking. For live sessions, Whop has built-in livestreaming that notifies members when you go live and saves each stream. Whop's chat settings let you limit posting to admins (useful for announcement channels), turn off reactions, block media or links, ban words and set a posting cooldown.
Discord is the better home when your members already live there, when voice and stage channels are part of the product, or when you rely on Discord bots for moderation, games or alerts. In that case, gate the server with Whop or with Server Subscriptions rather than moving people.
If you're also weighing Skool, it's a third model: a course-plus-community app where the Hobby plan costs $9 a month plus 10% + $0.30 per payment and Pro costs $99 a month plus 2.9% + $0.30. The Whop vs Skool comparison runs those numbers.
When Discord Server Subscriptions is the better choice
Discord's built-in option is the better pick in these cases, despite the higher fees.
- You're US-based, your members already spend their day in Discord, and you'd rather they never see a second checkout or create another account.
- You want Discord to calculate, collect and remit sales tax for you at no extra charge, and to field refund requests.
- Your tiers are cheap. Below about $2.46 a month (about $3.26 if the 3% app fee applies), Discord's percentage costs less than Whop's $0.30 per payment. If Whop's $0.07 Radar fee applies to every payment, those points rise to about $3.03 and $4.02.
- You don't want a third-party bot sitting at the top of your role list with permission to manage every role below it.
When Whop is the better choice
Whop is the better choice when fees, payout speed or what you sell matter more than in-app convenience.
- Your tiers cost more than a few dollars a month. On $10 tiers bringing in $10,000 a month, Whop costs $620 against Discord's $1,540 under its published fees, saving you $920 a month, or $620 if the 3% app fee applies.
- You're outside the US, where Server Subscriptions isn't available.
- You want your money within days, not once a month after a $100 threshold.
- You want annual or one-time pricing, courses, files, Telegram access or a community on Whop's own Chat.
Whop's limitations are real. Members must create a Whop account and link Discord before they get a role, which costs you some conversions. Whop runs payments on Whop Payments, so you can't use your own Stripe account, and new or higher-risk accounts can face reserves. The 3% app fee is unresolved. And sellers on r/whop have posted 2026 complaints about holds and slow support, so keep a buffer while your account is new.
Switching from Discord Server Subscriptions to Whop
Discord holds the billing relationship, so subscribers can't be transferred; each one subscribes again on Whop. Plan the switch around Discord's rule that you deliver what each tier promised, or offer refunds when you materially change it.
- Set up your Whop product with the same price, connect Whop's Discord app, and give Whop its own role so the two systems don't fight over permissions. The paid Discord server setup guide covers each screen.
- Stop selling new Discord tiers, and tell subscribers what's changing, when, and that their current perks continue until their paid month ends.
- Offer a Whop plan with a free trial that covers the time they've already paid Discord for, so nobody pays twice for the same month. The subscription migration guide explains the trial approach.
- Once every Discord subscription has run out and your last Discord payout has cleared, disable Server Subscriptions. Discord won't let you remove them while active subscribers or a pending payout remain.
Discord isn't one of the source platforms in our migration tool, since there's no subscriber export to import from. If you're coming from a bot that bills through your own Stripe account instead, like LaunchPass, card subscriptions can move without members paying again; see how Whop compares with LaunchPass.
How we compared
We compared Discord's Monetization Terms, Monetization Policy and creator support articles with Whop's fee page, pricing page and help docs, all checked on October 3, 2026 unless a source says otherwise. We didn't run paid subscriptions on either platform for this page. Fee examples use the same assumptions for every column (US cards, $10 monthly subscriptions, Whop's 0.5% billing fee included, desktop or web purchases for Discord, no Radar fee, taxes, payout fees or currency conversion) and are rounded to whole dollars. Where Whop's pages disagree with each other, as with the 3% app fee, we show both numbers.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Discord take from server subscriptions?
About 15.4% of a desktop or web payment. Discord's Monetization Terms list a 6% payment processing fee and a 10% platform fee calculated on what's left after processing fees and taxes, so a $10 subscription pays you $8.46. On iOS and Google Play, the app store's fee is added to the buyer's price instead, and the 10% platform fee still applies.
Discord vs Whop fees: which is cheaper?
Whop, at any typical price. On a $10 monthly subscription, Discord keeps $1.54 on desktop and web, while Whop keeps $0.62 under its published fee schedule, or $0.92 if the 3% fee on its Discord app listing applies, before its $0.07 Radar fee. Whop's flat $0.30 per payment only makes Discord cheaper for tiers below about $2.46 a month, or about $3.26 with the 3% fee. If Radar applies to every payment, those points rise to about $3.03 and $4.02.
Can I use Discord Server Subscriptions outside the US?
No. Discord's Creator Revenue FAQ says Server Subscriptions will not be available outside the United States, and payout setup through Stripe requires US banking information and US identification. Owners elsewhere need a third-party option such as a Whop-gated server, which pays out to over 200 countries, or another paywall bot that supports their country.
Do members need a Whop account to join a Whop-gated Discord?
Yes. Members buy on Whop, connect their Discord account under social accounts in their Whop settings, then open your product's Discord app and press Claim Access. Whop's bot then gives them the roles you picked. That extra step is the main convenience Discord's built-in subscriptions have over Whop, so spell it out in your welcome message and checkout page.
Can I move Discord server subscribers to Whop without them re-subscribing?
No. Discord bills subscribers inside Discord, and we found no Discord tool for exporting or transferring paying subscribers, so each one subscribes again on Whop. Offer a Whop trial that covers the time they've already paid Discord for, and keep their Discord perks until each subscription runs out, since Discord's terms require you to deliver what you sold.
Does Discord handle sales tax on server subscriptions?
Yes, where local law requires it. Discord's Monetization Terms say it assesses, collects and remits transaction taxes such as sales tax and VAT on your offerings. On Whop, tax on direct sales is yours to handle by default. Whop's optional tax service costs 2% on transactions where tax is collected and can calculate and collect it for you, but remits it only in the US, EU and UK. Whop handles tax itself on sales through its Discover marketplace.
Can I use Whop and Discord Server Subscriptions in the same server?
Yes, if each one manages its own roles. Discord ties Server Subscription perks to the roles and channels you assign to each tier, and Whop's bot only adds and removes the roles you pick in its app. Don't quietly move perks a Discord tier includes behind Whop: Discord's terms require notice or refunds when you materially change what subscribers get.
Is Skool or Discord better for a paid community?
It depends on whether you want a course-plus-community app or a chat server. Skool includes courses and its own feed for $9 a month plus 10% + $0.30 per payment on Hobby, or $99 a month plus 2.9% + $0.30 on Pro. Discord Server Subscriptions has no monthly fee but keeps about 15.4%, has no course tools and is US-only.
