Whop vs Patreon: Which Is Better for Paid Fan Memberships?
MoveToWhop is independent and not affiliated with Whop, Inc. or any platform we cover. We may earn a referral commission from Whop when you create a Whop through our links. It never costs you anything, and it's how we keep migrations free. How we make money
Quick answer
Whop costs less per payment. On a $10 monthly membership paid by US card, Whop takes about $0.62 and Patreon's 10% Standard plan takes $1.59, a gap of $97 per $1,000. Patreon is stronger at fan discovery, built-in email and collecting sales tax and VAT at no extra cost. Whop is stronger on fees, iOS billing and bundling courses, forums and Discord access.
Our verdict
Choose Whop if
you're on Patreon's 10% Standard plan, lose money to Apple's in-app fee, or want courses, forums and Discord roles behind one checkout
Choose Patreon if
new patrons find you through Patreon's app, you want VAT and sales tax handled at no extra cost, or you're on the 5% Founders plan with modest revenue

Pricing and fees: what you actually pay
Neither platform charges a monthly fee, so the whole difference is in the cut. On a US card payment, Patreon's Standard plan takes 12.9% + $0.30 and Whop takes 3.2% + $0.30 on subscription charges, so Patreon costs 9.7% of your revenue more at any price point.
Which Patreon rate you pay depends on when your page went live. Pages first published after August 4, 2025 are on the 10% Standard plan. Older pages keep a legacy rate of 5% (Founders), 8% (Pro) or 11% (Pro + Merch) for as long as they stay published (Patreon help center, checked October 3, 2026). Every Patreon line item, including currency and payout fees, is broken down in our Patreon fees guide.
Prices as of October 2026. Sources at the end of this page.
| Monthly revenue ($10 membership, US cards) | Patreon Standard (10%) | Patreon Pro, legacy (8%) | Patreon Founders, legacy (5%) | Whop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 (100 payments) | $159 | $139 | $96 | $62 |
| $10,000 (1,000 payments) | $1,590 | $1,390 | $960 | $620 |
| $50,000 (5,000 payments) | $7,950 | $6,950 | $4,800 | $3,100 |
The formula is the same for every column: fees = payments × (price × percentage + $0.30). Patreon Standard is 10% + 2.9%, legacy Pro is 8% + 2.9%, and Founders is 5% + 1.6%, Founders' discounted USD card rate. Whop is 2.7% + 0.5% billing on subscription charges (docs.whop.com/fees). We assume a $10 monthly membership paid by US cards, with no payout fees, currency conversion, taxes or optional add-ons, rounded to whole dollars.
Costs the table leaves out
- Payout fees. Patreon charges $0.25 per US bank payout through Stripe, or 1% via PayPal (minimum $0.25, maximum $20). Whop charges $2.50 for next-day ACH and 4% + $1 for instant payouts. At one withdrawal a month, the difference is a couple of dollars.
- International fans. Patreon adds 2.5% when a fan pays in a different currency from your payout currency, calculated on the tax-inclusive amount, and non-USD payouts carry higher processing (EUR: 3.4% + €0.35). Whop adds 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion applies.
- Fraud screening. Whop's fee page lists Radar at $0.07 per transaction and 3D Secure at $0.03 when required. Radar would add $7 per 100 payments to the Whop column.
- Tax collection. If you want Whop to collect sales tax and VAT the way Patreon does, Whop Tax Service adds 2%. That brings a $10 payment to $0.82 on Whop, still about half of Patreon's $1.59.
Test your own tier prices and international mix with the fee calculator, and see every Whop charge in our Whop fees breakdown. This section explains published fees. It isn't financial or tax advice.
Apple's in-app fee on Patreon vs Whop
Apple's cut lands hardest on Patreon creators with international fans, and it doesn't touch Whop memberships, because Whop sells subscriptions through web checkout.
On Patreon, memberships bought in the iOS app go through Apple's in-app purchase system. Apple takes 30% of the iOS price, dropping to 15% after a member completes a year of continuous billing (25% and 12% in China). Patreon drops its own processing fee on those payments, but its platform fee still applies (Patreon creator fees overview). You can't opt out of Apple's fee for fans outside the US, while US fans can choose web checkout instead. iOS earnings stay pending for up to 75 days, and annual memberships aren't sold in the iOS app.
Patreon creators get two options. You can let Patreon raise iOS prices by roughly 43% so you net about the same, or keep prices the same and absorb the fee. Absorbing it on a $10 membership means Apple keeps $3.00 and Patreon's 10% still applies, leaving you about $6, against $8.41 from the same $10 paid by card on the web (before any currency conversion).
Whop's help center says Apple's in-app purchase only handles one-time purchases under $700 made inside the Whop iOS app, marked up 42.86% so you net your normal price. Subscriptions and larger purchases go through Whop's web checkout.
If a real share of your patrons pay through Apple, moving them to a web checkout recovers most of that 30%.
Payouts and getting paid
Patreon's payouts are cheap and predictable. Whop's are faster if you pay for speed, but a new Whop account can have part of each sale held back.
On Patreon, you can start a payout once every 24 hours or turn on automatic payouts on the 5th of each month, and money typically arrives in 1 to 5 days (Patreon help center). Shop sales stay pending for up to 7 days and iOS earnings for up to 75. Adding or changing a payout method puts a 5-day hold on your balance.
On Whop, standard payouts take up to 5 business days, and instant payouts arrive in minutes for 4% + $1 (Whop docs). Whop says it can hold back a reserve on new accounts or accounts with little sales history. Its own example is 10% of each sale held for 90 days.
Bottom line: an established Patreon creator pays almost nothing to get paid, while on Whop you should plan your first few months of cash flow around a possible reserve.
Audience and discovery
Patreon is better at sending you fans who've never heard of you. Fans browse an Explore tab built around their interests and a home feed that mixes in creator recommendations, and creators can recommend each other to their members (Patreon help center).
Whop has a Discover marketplace and removed its 30% marketplace fee in May 2025 (Whop changelog). Its affiliate program lets other people promote your membership for a commission you set. CoinDesk's February 2026 coverage describes Whop's marketplace as software tools, trading groups, online communities and learning courses.
In our view, a fan-art, comics, fiction or podcast audience is a less natural fit on Whop's marketplace than on Patreon's Explore tab, so plan to bring your own audience to Whop.
Content, community and email
Patreon is the simpler home for a post-and-newsletter membership, and Whop fits better when the membership is a course, a community or a Discord.
Patreon's pricing page lists posts with audio, images and native video, livestreaming, chats, DMs and comments, email newsletters, and podcast tools with RSS distribution. Its Discord integration grants roles by paid tier.
Whop is built from apps you add to a product: Courses (with quizzes and progress tracking), Forums, Chat, Events for live or in-person sessions, Content pages, Files and Calendar Bookings, plus Discord access. Whop's built-in messaging covers automated welcome and goodbye messages by DM or email, so regular newsletters need a separate email tool.
If your patrons mostly read posts in their inbox, Patreon does that out of the box. If they come for lessons or a community, Whop does more under one checkout.
Taxes and who's the merchant
Both companies act as the merchant for payments, but Patreon does more of the tax work by default.
Patreon calculates, collects and remits VAT, GST and US sales tax on fan payments where it has the obligation, adding it on top of your price, and it may charge tax on its own fees to you (Patreon help center).
On Whop Payments, Whop is the merchant of record. For direct sales you choose a tax option: Whop Tax Service at 2% per transaction, either collecting and remitting for you in the US, UK and EU or collecting while you remit, or handling tax yourself at no Whop fee. On Discover marketplace sales, Whop has collected and remitted applicable US sales tax since March 1, 2026. Whop notes that a managed option doesn't remove your own tax obligations (Whop docs).
Bottom line: for a fanbase spread across Europe, Patreon's included tax handling is worth something, and on Whop you should budget the 2%.
When Patreon is the better choice
Patreon wins in these situations, and moving would cost you more than it saves.
- You're on the legacy Founders plan. Your total is 5% + 1.6% + $0.30, only $34 per $1,000 more than Whop. At $2,000 a month that's $68, which about seven $10 patrons who don't re-subscribe would wipe out.
- Patreon sends you new patrons. If your new patrons tend to find you inside Patreon's app rather than through your own channels, that pipeline doesn't move with you.
- Your fans are mostly in VAT countries and you don't want tax admin. Patreon includes collection and remittance at no extra fee.
- Your membership runs on Patreon's built-in newsletters, native video and podcast feeds, and rebuilding them elsewhere would take more time than the fee savings are worth to you.
When Whop is the better choice
Whop wins when the 10% fee or Apple's cut is a real line in your budget, or when your membership is more than posts.
- You're on the 10% Standard plan. At $10,000 a month you keep $970 more.
- Many patrons pay through Apple. Whop memberships use web checkout, so that 30% goes away.
- You want courses, forums or a gated Discord sold together with the membership.
- You want faster access to cash and will pay 4% + $1 for instant payouts when you need them.
Whop has real limits you should weigh before switching:
- No built-in email newsletters. Whop's messaging covers automated welcome and goodbye messages, so broadcasts need another tool.
- New accounts can face reserves, and r/whop has 2026 reports of 90-day holds and slow support.
- No member import. Every patron has to re-subscribe, and some won't.
- Video files have to be re-uploaded or embedded from YouTube or Loom.
- Sales tax and VAT collection costs 2% extra.
What creators say
Creators on both platforms post about fees and payouts. These are individual reports, not representative samples.
- On r/patreon, a July 2025 thread argued that Patreon's fees are too high, and creators there describe total deductions of roughly 15% to 23% once processing, conversion and payout fees are added. A September 2026 thread asks why one creator's cut came to 17%.
- A March 2025 r/patreon thread reacted to iOS payments taking 75 days to clear.
- On r/whop, an August 2026 post describes a 90-day rolling reserve placed after about $20,000 in sales with slow answers, and another 2026 thread complains that support is AI-first and wouldn't escalate.
Switching from Patreon to Whop
Patreon is the merchant, so patrons can't be moved with their cards; each one re-subscribes on Whop. Our free migration tool builds your Whop plans from your tiers, imports your Relationship Manager CSV, and gives each paying patron a free trial that covers the time they've already paid Patreon for. The Patreon to Whop playbook covers the timeline, Discord roles and an announcement email. If you're weighing other platforms too, see our ranked list of Patreon alternatives, or how Whop compares with Gumroad and Discord's own Server Subscriptions.
How we compared
We compared published pricing and help-center documentation from Patreon and Whop, checked October 2 and 3, 2026. We didn't run a live Patreon page for this comparison, and we didn't test either platform's support. Fee math uses identical assumptions for both sides: a $10 monthly membership, US cards, no payout fees, no currency conversion, no taxes, and whole-dollar rounding. Reddit threads are cited as anecdotes. Move to Whop earns a referral commission if you create a Whop through our links, and nothing from Patreon. Our seller-side Whop review covers payout holds and support in more depth.

Frequently asked questions
Is Whop better than Patreon?
For fees, yes: on US card payments Whop costs 9.7% of revenue less than Patreon's Standard plan, before Whop's $0.07 Radar fee. Patreon is better if its Explore tab and recommendations bring you new patrons, if you want VAT and sales tax handled at no extra cost, or if you use its built-in newsletters and podcast feeds. Whop suits memberships built around courses, forums or Discord.
Patreon vs Whop fees: which is cheaper?
Whop, on every Patreon plan we checked. A $10 monthly payment by US card costs $0.62 on Whop, $1.59 on Patreon's 10% Standard plan, $1.39 on legacy Pro and $0.96 on legacy Founders. Whop's $0.07 Radar fee and its optional 2% tax service narrow the gap but don't close it. Patreon's $0.25 US payouts are cheaper than Whop's $2.50 next-day ACH.
Can I use both Whop and Patreon at the same time?
Yes. Some creators keep Patreon for discovery and sell a course or a paid Discord on Whop. Each platform charges its own fees on its own sales, and patrons pay each one separately. If both connect to the same Discord server, give each bot its own roles so Patreon's bot removing a role never cuts off someone paying on Whop.
Does Whop charge Apple's 30% fee like Patreon does?
Not on memberships. Whop's help center says subscriptions and purchases of $700 or more use Whop's web checkout, and Apple's in-app purchase only handles one-time purchases under $700 made inside the Whop iOS app, marked up 42.86%. On Patreon, memberships bought in the iOS app by fans outside the US pay Apple 30%, falling to 15% after a year.
Does Whop handle VAT and sales tax like Patreon?
Only if you pay for it. Patreon calculates, collects and remits VAT and sales tax on fan payments where it's obligated, with no separate fee. Whop's Tax Service costs 2% per transaction and either collects and remits for you (US, UK and EU) or collects while you remit. Without it, tax on direct sales is your job. This isn't tax advice.
Which is better for a paid Discord server, Whop or Patreon?
Both can gate Discord roles. Patreon's bot grants roles by paid tier and syncs daily. Whop's Discord app grants roles per product and lets you choose what happens when a membership ends, including kicking the member. Whop also sells the Discord alongside courses and forums at lower fees, while Patreon brings its own app and discovery. Pick on fees and audience.
Can Whop bring me new fans the way Patreon's Explore page does?
Less reliably for fan memberships. Patreon's Explore tab and home feed recommend creators to fans who already use Patreon. Whop has a Discover marketplace and an affiliate program that pays promoters a commission you set, but CoinDesk describes the marketplace as software tools, trading groups, communities and courses. Plan to bring your own audience to Whop.
